Pigs Arrive On the Farm!
We took a trip a couple of weeks ago (these pictures are from that time period) just south of Monte Vista, CO where we acquired these gorgeous pigs! The family farm we bought them from primarily breeds and sells pigs that others can raise as meat. We had been looking for pigs at a decent price we discovered that at this time of the year many pigs are being sold at high prices as 4-H projects. Our children are still too young for 4-H, so needless to say we didn't need any $250 gilt (young female pig) to raise. The pig farmer and his wife, whom he affectionately called "my honey", were once what would have been considered a typical farm family. They used to have a dairy cow, meat and egg chickens, pigs, horses, etc. They now limit themselves to the pigs, some laying hens and a couple of cute farm dogs because it does not "pay" anymore in our culture, governmental system and tax system to spread ones self so thin in farming. I have dreams of one day living on our little farm sustaining ourselves abundantly and healthfully with exactly the kind of diversity farmers are moving away from in current times. I don't really want to have copious amounts of any one animal or plant, but I'd like to have enough of the full cornucopia I long for a time with the small family farm is as supported by our culture/government as the large CAFO's and monoculture farms. I hope that you and your "honey" put in your vote for small farmers by buying from the farmers around you, the farmers markets in your neighborhoods,
or/and by growing your own.
